Lord Pashupatinath is the guardian form of Lord Shiva. The epithet is a reference to His lordship (‘pati’) and rulership (‘nath’) over the entire faunal kingdom (‘pashu’). As such, the lively, innocent-eyed quadruped that you see in the left posterior hand of the Lord, is integral to Pashupatinath’s iconography.
Long, fine-boned limbs. A tall, stately physique, one that inspires the devotee with a sense of protection and belonging. This traditional Pashupatinath sculpture has been fashioned from pure bronze. It has a deep earth colour finish and features a wealth of detail in terms of attire and adornment.
The anterior hands of Lord Pashupatinath are in the stance of playing a musical instrument. From the plinth upon which He stands to the rest of the divine appearance, the Pashupatinath iconography is essentially minimalist.
