Madurai Veeran or the hero of the city of Madurai is a regional deity in Tamil Nadu’s sacred town, which is guarded by the powerful Lord of people.
According to his story “Maduraiveeraswami Kathai”, when Veeran reached Madurai, due to some conflict with the king, he was murdered but was brought back to life by the benevolent Meenakshi Amman.
From then on, Madurai Veeran was crowned the guardian of the city of Devi Meenakshi and its residents.
His folk associations are captured in this granite statue by his simple ornamentation and attire, which is beautifully detailed- especially in the delicate knot of his short dhoti and designs of his necklace. Naturalistic depiction brings a lively aura to the statue, elevated by the vigorously raised hand of Madurai Veeran while a balance is introduced by the gentle yet firm placement of his hand on the Gada (mace)- the attitude of a kind and powerful protector.
