Among many tales of Lord Shiva’s Tandava, this sculpture cast exquisitely in Panchaloha bronze traces its narration in the forests of Thillai. As the story goes - Goddess Kali who’s deemed as the guardian of the forest, did not let Lord Shiva perform his dance - to which he posed a dance challenge to her, the condition being his win grants him the forest to perform the dance. As he started to perform the cosmic dance, Devi matched each movement with her excellence and grace; it is then Shiva lifted his leg up, pointing it towards the sky which the goddess refrained from, given her modesty. Depicted as Ashtabhuja (eight-armed) Nataraja, this sculptor draws inspiration from the Chidambareshwar temple of Tamil Nadu.
