When a young Hanuman became the disciple of Lord Surya, his mother Anjani was relieved and happy. Surya deva imparted valuable knowledge and vidyas to Hanuman, who was the model learner. After completing his education, Hanuman felt indebted and offered to pay Guru-Dakshina, a gift given to teachers, thanking them for their immeasurable contributions. The Sun god refused to take the Dakshina. Seeing this, Hanuman came up with an innovative solution. He laid the foundations for Surya-namaskar, the popular yogic regimen, as a way to pay respect to his master.
Hanuman stands with his hands folded, in the namaskar pose which is the first posture of the Surya Namskar. He appears quite youthful in comparison to the images where he is shown as a muscular and fully grown man. The face of the monkey god in this beautiful copper idol exudes devotion and veneration, much sought after virtues by his devotees.
