Mahabalipuram or Mahamallapuram since early times has been a center for religious and cultural developments, whose impact can be seen in the rich art and architecture of the region. The divinity of the deities is experienced in the black stone and granite sculptures of Mahabalipuram, one of which is this beautiful Lord Vishnu or Perumal statue, sculpted in hard granite stone.
The Lord stands still, in his celestial four-armed roopa, wearing the elongated Kiritamukuta, Skandha-abhushana (shoulder ornaments), necklace, and Yajnopavita in a criss-cross fashion on his chest. His left hand rests on his waist in the Katihastha mudra, while his right is placed in the Varada mudra, the gesture of disseminating boons. Standing on a bloomed lotus that symbolizes the universe's origin, this stone statue presents Bhagwan Perumal as the supreme protector Lord.
