The awe-inspiring gilded copper Bhairava or Bhairab mask from Nepal reminds us of the impressive gilt icon of the god in Darbar Square, at Kathmandu’s Hanuman Dhoka. The flaming tresses of Bhairav form a stunning halo behind him on which the crescent moon, serpent, and skull (attributes of Shiva or Bhairav) are nestled. The Nepalese five-pronged crown of Bhairava has been superbly designed, with four skulls and a Buddha head placed on blooming lotuses. Alternatively known as Kaal-Bhairava, the icon has a spectacularly expressive face, which is enough to keep Kaal (death) away from his devotees.
