“शान्ताकारं भुजगशयनं पद्मनाभं सुरेशं
विश्वाधारं गगनसदृशं मेघवर्ण शुभाङ्गम्
लक्ष्मीकान्तं कमलनयनं योगिभिर्ध्यानगम्यम्
वन्दे विष्णुं भवभयहरं सर्वलोकैकनाथम्”
“Serene, lying on serpent bed, with a lotus emerging from his navel, the Lord of Gods. The foundation of the Universe, with a body like the dark rainy clouds. The beloved of Lakshmi, lotus-eyed, immersed in a Yogic slumber, I bow down to you, Vishnu, the remover of fear, the supreme Lord of all realms”.
This description of Vishnu-Narayana in his cosmic ocean or Ksheersagar has been transformed into a divine vision in the bronze sculpture.
Supported by the hood of Adishesha, reclining on his naturalistically depicted coils, Vishnu is adorned in a kingly manner, poised and relaxed, with his face expressing a heavenly calm.
From his navel sprouts the lotus on which Brahma is enthroned, his miniature icon finely sculpted with a smile visible on his face. Serving the Lord of three realms is Devi Lakshmi, the Chaturbhuja or four-armed goddess of auspiciousness and wealth, her hands reaching Vishnu’s feet and the benevolent smile on her beautiful face animating the composition. The sculpture is placed atop a pedestal with Simha or lion feet. Sculpted in a rounded manner, the bronze masterpiece has immaculate details on the reverse, allowing the viewer to immerse themselves in the Darshana of Vishnu-Loka.
