Shiva is the primal instructor or Guru in his Dakshinamurty Roopa, one of whose iconographic depictions is Shiva-Veendhara (Shiva with the Veena or lute, which is often absent from the classic bronze icons).
Shiva wears a short dhoti, jewelry, and a Yajnopavita, all of which are expertly designed to accentuate Veenadhara's elegance and natural beauty.
His hair is styled in a long Jatamukuta, which is embellished with the crescent moon, Ganga, and Makara emblem.
In addition to carrying the goad and Pashu (deer insignia), which stand for restraint, Shiva's primary hands are stretched in an exquisite gesture of holding the Veena. Shiva is the perfect teacher, fostering creativity with the melodies of his lute and guiding the soul or Pashu in the proper direction with the goad. With him around, no spiritual or material objective is unachievable.
