Hindu tradition has long associated the famous image of Shiva and Parvati, known as the Uma-Maheshwara murti, with auspiciousness and balance in the Universe. This artwork represents the merging of the ultimate male and female principles, Purusha and Prakriti, or Shiva and Shakti, in Shaiva shrines. This magnificent wooden figure depicts Shiva sitting on his bull mount, holding Uma in his lap, giving the impression of Uma-Maheshwara in the traditional iconography.

Shiva is in his Pashupati form, wearing a long Jatamukuta (crown of tresses), jewelry, and a lower body garment made of tiger hide. Uma is with him, seeming feminine and carrying a lotus flower. Magnificence is added by a magnificent Kirtimukha, or face of glory, in the composition's highest section. The Shakti or pure energy produced from the union of Shiva and Shakti is presented in this wooden Uma-Maheshwara murti with a brilliant red hue, that rules the composition, giving it a radiant, celestial aura.
