As if bedecked to attend the divine Chithirai Tiruvila festival- a commemoration of her marriage, goddess Meenakshi enlivens this mesmerizing bronze.
In the Tamil region, Meenakshi is the supreme goddess, the mother of all beings, a connection which is reflected in her unique trousseau. Her hair is tied in a lovely hairdo, known as Meenakshi Kondai, and her silken saree is draped in the Madisar style- popular among Tamil Brahmin women. To glorify the beauty of Meenakshi (the fish-eyed goddess), her saree is delineated as an ethereal drape, each fold creating symmetrical sways all over, adding movement to the metal.
The graceful triple-bent (Tribhanga) of the goddess is framed by a traditional floral garland, its two ends framing the poise of Meenakshi
Adorned from head to toe, with her characteristic attributes, Meenakshi, the divine bride of Shiva-Sundareshwara, is placed on a classic two-tiered lotus pedestal.
