Hanuman, the mighty Hindu god and devotee of Rama, in the Ramayana, is also an intelligent commander of Sugreeva (the king of Vanaras) and a confidant of Rama, who was key in his victory over Ravana’s massive army.
An ode to the wit and brilliance of Hanuman is his classic bronzes, where Hanuman appears in a conversational pose, giving battle-winning advice to his king.
This bronze depicts Hanuman with an ornate crown that mirrors the regal Gopuram of Tamil temples, a U-shaped Tilak, round earrings, necklaces Yajnopavita neatly tied on his chest, layered waistbelt and a short dhoti.
On the reverse, his tail is rooted firmly on the lotus pedestal, a symbol of calmness and steadfastness, qualities of an ideal advisor. The gentle smile on Hanuman’s face and his interactive hand gestures, along with the relaxed yet alert pose of the statue, bring a sense of life to it, making this Panchaloha a prime example of the skills of Swamimalai artists.
