Buddha, in the art of the East, is the artistic zenith of an enlightened mind, whose brilliance can be seen in the depiction of Tathagata. This black stone statue of Buddha, placed on a lacquered wooden platform shows Buddha’s bust, delineated with such perfection that the icon appears heavenly animated. Following the idiom of Classical Gandhara art, Buddha is wrapped in a fine Cheevara (monk’s garb) whose delicate folds are realistically presented in the statue. His characteristic attributes- seamless curls, arched brows, lotus eyes, delicate lips, and elongated earlobes are all beautifully captured by the artist. An intricate halo, with a blooming lotus flower motif, outlines the enlivened countenance of Buddha, symbolizing the emergence of enlightened wisdom inside a person, which leads them on the path to Nirvana.
