"Somaskanda"- Shiva with (sa) Uma and Skanda (Karttikeya) is one of the most popular icons of Shiva, which was revered inside the sanctum of South Indian temples, placed behind the primary statue or Lingam. In this divinely beautiful composition, Shiva in his Pashupati roopa is accompanied by his Shakti, Devi Uma, and a small icon of Karttikeya placed in between his celestial parents. Both Shiva and Parvati are in the royal Lalitasana posture, mirroring the heavenliness of their roopa, the very picture of conjugal perfection.
The small Skanda icon standing in the middle on a separate pedestal represents the auspiciousness of the union of Purusha and Prakriti, Shiva and Shakti, which manifests as Shanmukha. Haloed by an imposing aureole, this bronze Somaskanda statue recreates the mystical beauty of traditional Panchaloha murtis.
