Devouring serpents who are its legendary enemies, the beautiful peacock carved in granite is the divine mount of Kumara Kartikeya, called “Paravani”.
According to the Skanda Purana, when Kartikeya or Murugan defeated a demon named Surapadma, he was divided into two halves. One became the Paravani Mayura or peacock, the mount of Kumara, and the other transformed into the rooster that became the emblem on his flag.
To mark its sacred status, Paravani is elevated on a beautifully sculpted granite lotus pedestal, a two-tiered platform acting as the stage for the dynamic presence of the peacock.
The graceful posture of the peacock is marvelously captured by the artist, making the solid granite on its tail appear feathery light and displaying a natural curve of the bird’s neck, giving this sacred artwork a naturalistic appeal.
