Ganesha is adored and revered because he is seen as a remover of barriers and a harbinger of prosperity. Another name for Ganesha is Ekadanta Ganapati. The word “Eka” stands for the number one, while the word “Danta” means “tusk”. Ekadanta Ganapati, then, refers to the Lord with a single tusk. Wrapped with a snake, Ganesha’s big belly signifies that he holds the entire universe safely in his belly. The sculpture depicts Lord Ganesha with four hands, sitting on a pedestal podium attached with a floral KirtiMukha (face of glory) throne. He is clutching his broken tusk, an ankusha (goad), a noose, and a modak. Ekadanta Ganapati is one of the Lord’s merciful facets. He is claimed to be assuring his followers of his selfless commitment to them and his willingness to make any sacrifice for their benefit by giving up one of his own tusks and being only seen with one tusk.
