This beautifully ornate wall hanging decorative piece from South India projects the trinity of Vishnu as Venkateshwara, and two famously recognizable Vaishnavite symbols: the ‘sudarshana chakra’ or the war discus, and the Panchajanya ‘shankha’ or conch. The figure of Tirupati, as the Venkateshwara form of Vishnu presiding at the site of the Venkata hill in Andhra Pradesh, is famous for being ‘swayambhu,’ or a self-manifested image.
The central image, executed in the style of the splendid Hoysala art, replicates Tirupati in his ‘Moolavirat’ image, where he is standing on a lotus pedestal, holding onto the ‘shankha’ and the ‘chakra,’ and gesturing the ‘varada’ boon-granting ‘mudra’ along with the ‘katyavalambita hastha,’ where his other hand is pressed against his thigh.
