Standing on a fully blossomed and realistically carved lotus flower, this copper statue shows the lord of medicine, Sri Dhanvantari.
Lord Dhanvantari was born during the churning of the ocean, with a pot containing the amrita or elixir of life. In this murti, one can identify the pot of amrita in one of his hands. The other three hands hold shankha (the conch shell), medicinal herbs, and a treatise on Ayurveda, the ancient Indian medical science. Lord Dhanvantari is evoked for his healing abilities. According to a legend from the Vishnu Purana, Dhanvantari was born as a king in Varanasi, where he compiled his medical knowledge for the greater good. Lord Dhanvantari is the presiding deity of people practicing and learning Ayurveda and is worshipped on Dhanteras, two days before Deepawali, the Indian festival of lights.
