The traditional South Indian image of Ardhanarishvara. Fashioned from bronze; the deity standing on the pistil of an upturned lotus bloom. Tall, stately form, set off by the tapering, templetop-like crown. These are the foremost hallmarks of South Indian iconography.
Ardhanarishvara is the roopa of ishvara that accommodates the feminine as much as the masculine. Visually, it is the fusion of Shiva into Parvati, purusha into prakrti, energy into matter. And what an elegantly sculpted fusion it is - superbly toned limbs, the distinguished features of the twin torso of the male and the female, and the luxuriant adornment embossed all over.
The rich, earth colour of pure bronze medium. In places, overtones of a barely discernible blue-green. This, together with the finesse of Ardhanarishvara’s form and features, betray the purity and the authenticity of the bronze.
