“Dhawala”- she who is fair-skinned or she who wears a white attire, is an epithet for the goddess of wisdom, Devi Saraswati, as an expression of her pristine, untainted, and divine knowledge. Appearing in this traditional wooden statue from South India as a fair-skinned, youthful maiden, the goddess Saraswati is four-armed and enthroned on a lotus.
She wears a blue garment, suggestive of her form as a river or stream, with the waves of her waters creating gentle folds in her garment. Surrounded by a Kirtimukha Prabha and placed on a double-layered seat, the great goddess carries her Veena, rosary, and book, emanating ancient wisdom with her presence.
