The ruling couple of paraloka (otherworldly realm of existence), the gracious Vishnu-Lakshmi stand together as perfect complements to each other. The figurines that you see on this page are sculpted from pure brass the colour of pale, molten gold. The same is superimposed with richly coloured inlaid bits in red and green, which mostly form the robes on their forms and the plinths upon which they stand.
Devi Lakshmi is usually portrayed as the chaturbhujadharini (the one possessed of four arms) in Her singular iconography and the dvibhujadharini (two arms) next to Her husband. The ensemble that you see on this page deviates from the norm. Seemingly She emerges from a quantum of waves, Her feet resting upon a lotus. This is a nod to the legend of the samudramanthana, from which Lakshmi is said to have been born as a jewel.
He Lord and master, the great Vishnu, stands within the coils of the omnipotent Sheshanaga. The textures of both the anguine form and the sea-foam have been brought out with a great degree of skill and perfection. Note the inlay-work on the crown of Lakshmi and along the underbellies of the five-hooded snake above Vishnu’s head.
