Originally a local mother-goddess, Devi Mariamman (Mari-rain, amman-mother) is revered across South India as an emanation and roopa of Durga, Kali, Parvati, Draupadi, and Renuka, in innumerable shrines. Essentially, the goddess represents the ancient powers associated with the divine feminine in India- fertility, maternal bliss, and protection of her children.
In this awe-inspiring Panchaloha bronze, Mariamman appears blissfully, enthroned on a glimmering platform, adorned in a queenly attire, and sitting in the auspicious and graceful Lalitasana posture. Smiling benevolently, Mariamman appears to have taken an abode in this statue, which is animated by her divine presence.
