The rare iconography of the Vishwaroopa Karttikeya. Known as Lord Arumugan, the Vishwaroopa bears six faces and twelve limbs. Each of them has been distinguished in the murti that you see on this page.
Upon the back of its beautiful vahana, the peacock, sits the Lord with His legs gathered in lalitasana. He bears weapons with which to vanquish adharma and generous blessing and fearlessness for the truly devoted.
The deep gold colour of Arumugan’s dhoti and adornment contrasts sharply with the earth-coloured complexion of His body. The body of the peacock is a solid gold colour. It cranes and twists its neck to gaze in the same frontal direction as its Lord and master. Miniature temple pillars flank its short body, from the tops of which emerges a perfectly circular prabhavali (aureole).
The crowns upon Arumugan’s six heads taper upwards such that the tips are almost touching. In the embrace of their Mother Parvati, six divine offspring had turned into one. The power and attributes of all of them remain intact in this one, singular deity.
