Mother Kali is revered as a feminist form of Shakti and an ultimate destroyer, who fights against evils for a peaceful, devoted and hassle-free life to her devotees. Kali is mostly depicted in an uncomfortable iconography, like a feral image of force, bursting sheer power. This brass sculpture of the goddess says it all. It is said that when Kali was busy in her uncontrollable victory dance, her consort, Lord Shiva lay in front of her feet like a corpse to stop her and she mistakenly stepped on his chest, on realising her fault, she lolled out her tongue in absolute shame.
This can also be seen in this brass statue, where Kali and Shiva are realistically sculpted in the said posture, depicting the aforementioned incident.
Shiva lies on an elongated pedestal chiselled in lotus petals and chaturbhujadharini Kali stands with simultaneous expressions of shame, terror and thirst on her face. Goddess Kali is richly embellished in multiple jewels and a long garland of human skulls along with a skirt made up of human hands.
Kali is often misunderstood as an image of death and black, but she reflects a dual image; the protruding red tongue is a sign of both modesty (Bengali tradition) and blood thirst, the voluptuous breasts signal sexual lust as well as the motherly nurture. The long-dishevelled hair represents the unrestrained blood lust and the metaphysical mystery of death that encircles life.
This Kali brass statue, represents her as glorified in a marvellous crown; carrying her destructive weaponries in her posterior hands and anterior hands hold a severed human head as a sign of liberating the human ego from the cycle of life and rebirth and the other hand postured in an elegant stance respectively. This brass sculpture is a perfect carving to depict the heavenly aura and rage of Mother Kali.
