Dakshinmurthy Shiva is depicted as the Adi Guru (the first Teacher), who imparts wisdom through silence and guides devotees on self-realization.
“Dakshinamurthy” means “the one who faces south,” symbolizing the direction associated with enlightenment, as it represents overcoming ignorance and darkness.
Carved from solid granite, the statue typically portrays him seated under a banyan tree, with one leg folded over the other in virasana (heroic pose) and the other resting on a small demon or dwarf figure, representing the suppression of ignorance.
His serene expression reflects his inner stillness and mastery over worldly knowledge.
In his hands, he holds sacred objects–such as scripture, fire, and his damru—which signify mastery over time, spiritual knowledge, and transformation.
