A brilliant blue-gold Nataraja for the abstract-loving devotee. The ashtabhujadhari Lord Shiva assumes the urdhvatandava stance, part of Nataraja’s tandava routine. The original urdhvatandava Shiva is to be found in the cave sculptures of the Elephanta islands.
Every other aspect of the Nataraja iconography is intact in this murti. The vanquished Apasmara beneath His feet, the flaming prabhavali adding to His wrath and vigour. The flaying locks and sashes, of course. In one of the left posterior hands, a visual reference to His Pashupatinath roopa.
The double-tiered pedestal adds to the glamour of this Nataraja murti. It looks like just the plinth to bear such emotion and dynamism as conveyed in the iconography.
