In classical and medieval Hinduism, Saraswati is primarily a goddess of poetic inspiration and learning. She is also identified with thought and intellect.
Standing elegantly on a lotus pedestal, the goddess looks deserving of veneration. Being placed on a lotus suggests her transcendence of the physical world. Although rooted in mud, the lotus perfects itself in a blossom that has transcended the mud. Elegantly dressed and adorned in the most exquisite jewellery, she does look divine. She wears a tall karandamukuta, with a prabhavali behind. Four hands, two normal and two emanating from the elbows hold the attributes, vina and a book. The former associates her with the musical arts and the latter with learning in general.
Despite being cast in brass, there is still delicacy in the tapering fingers, the intricacy of design in her garments and intriguingly, an air of divine abstraction in her face.
