Eyes gazing straight and mouth open as if to let out a war cry, an assurance for the good and a warning for the bad, Mahakali raises her ten armed hands with such divine force, as if to guard all ten directions (Dasa-Disha) all at once!
Her body is the color of smoke or Dhoomravarna, one that rises from the fire of cremation grounds, enveloping and overpowering everything that comes in its path.
Inspired by this powerful imagery of Mahakali, this hollow casted brass statue is a visual poetry written in praise of “Samara-Priya” Kali- she who takes delight in battles (Samara).
The pose of Shiva under her foot is supremely calm in contrast to the dynamism and drama of Mahakali’s form. His hands are spread on his sides and the stillness on his face conveys pure surrender. The serpent in Shiva’s neck raises his hood, baffled, eager to know who She is who authoritatively puts her foot on the chest of his Lord.
But Shiva knows. He knows when Mahakali is awakened, the best place to witness her divine play is at her feet.
