15'' Standing Lord vishnu | Madhuchista Vidhana (Lost-Wax) | Panchaloha Bronze from Swamimalai

$1025
Only 1 available

The ‘preserver’ of the great triad Trimurti, Vishnu, the supreme being reigning over reality, ‘kala’ or time, ‘karma,’ and ‘moksha,’ is depicted here as a ‘panchaloha’ bronze image in an erect, standing figure atop a raised lotus pedestal. Assumed in both Saguna and Nirguna qualities, Vishnu’s transcendental and unchanging attributes are manifested over various avatars that are benevolent (like Krishna and Rama) and fearsome (like Narasimha and Kalkin). His abodes are aplenty – from Vaikuntha to Kshira Sagara – and names even more: the Padma Purana acknowledges 108 names of Vishnu while the Garuda Purana, a thousand names.

The image that we have here however, presents the god in one of his most historically significant and truly recognizable forms, as Vishnu has manifested himself when part of the Trimurti. Two of his most common attributes are seen held in his hands – he holds the conch shell, or ‘shankha’ called Panchajanya – named so after the demon that lived in it, who Vishnu as Purushottama defeated in the Mahabharata – and the war discus ‘sudarshana chakra,’ which is his fearsome weapon used to restore balance and dharma. His other two hands, surprisingly, do not carry his other famous attributes (like the mace Kaumodaki and the lotus flower), but present themselves in two distinct postures – the ‘abhaya’ or fear-dispelling mudra, and the ‘katyavalambita mudra,’ which presents Vishnu’s left hand resting against his waist. The latter represents a relaxed yet confident attitude of the god. Vishnu further adorns an elaborate ‘mukuta,’ along with an ornate ‘dhoti’ that is held together by several girdles. His body furthermore is draped with multiples bands and necklaces, one of the possibly carrying the Kaustubha gem – the most valuable ‘ratnam’ in Hindu mythology.
