15'' Dakshinamurthy Shiva | Madhuchista Vidhana (Lost-Wax) | Panchaloha Bronze from Swamimalai

$1315
Only 1 available

In what could be one of the most apt descriptions for this image, Stella Kramrisch, writing in her work ‘Manifestations of Shiva,’ described this form as the supreme guru who “teaches in silence the oneness of one’s innermost self (atman) with the ultimate reality (brahman).” This is the manifestation of Shiva as Dakshinamurthy, one of the few instances where the supreme destroyer of the cosmos is not concerned with bringing about the great dissolution, or ‘pralaya’ of the world. Shiva’s personification here is that of the most revered and knowledgeable guru, whose eclecticism is spread over the studies of yoga, music, wisdom, and the shastras.

While literally meaning ‘one who is facing south’ (and perhaps being the only Hindu god that sits facing southward), Shiva’s form as Dakshinamurthy also means benevolence, hinting to his kind, paternal nature of a teacher, who becomes the guru of all those who have strayed from the righteous path and don’t have someone to correct them. As seen in this image, Shiva is seated under a banyan tree against a deer hide and surrounded by four sages that are receiving his instruction (along with two elephants). In a relaxed yogic ‘virasana,’ Shiva’s right foot is placed on the vanquished apasmara – the dwarf that signifies ignorance. We see Shiva holding his usual attributes, which are the ‘damru’ and the eternal fire of purification, and in this ‘jnana’ aspect of the supreme destroyer, we see him holding a bundle of scriptures as well as presenting his lower right hand in the ‘jnana mudra,’ with his index finger and thumb touching each other with the other three fingers stretched apart. The ‘jnana mudra’ seeks to interpret the union of the atman and the brahman (the index finger and the thumb) and the dispelling of arrogance, illusion, and bad karma (the three fingers).
