Abhishek Patra, a utensil, used for bathing the pious statues or idols of a God or Goddess comes in different sizes, shapes, and designs.
This auspicious ceremony is known as ‘Abhishekam’ and is considered to be a very important type of devotional service because it tends to purify our consciousness and mind, and ultimately pleases the Lord.
This Abhishek Patra is made of brass from South India, yet shines like molten gold. The tray of the Patra is rectangular in shape which is meant for placing the deities to be bathed.
Ingredients such as milk, honey, ghee (clarified butter), sugar syrup, rose water and various fruit juices are sprinkled on the deities while specific mantras and hymns are recited along. They are also showered with different fragrant flowers (Pushpa Abhishek). The tray opens up into a passage which allows all the liquid ingredients to pass through it to be collected in another vessel which is then distributed among the devotees. The body of this Patra is multi-layered and engraved with different designs from the art and culture of South India. The fine finishing and perfect detailing make it an attractive piece.
