Shakyamuni Buddha's distinguishing physical attributes aid in his recognition. He rests in the meditative Padmasana, his spine straight and poised. Draped in a modest monk's robe, it drapes his left side and arm while baring his right.
Atop his head, a protuberance symbolizes his elevated wisdom. His hair is depicted in tight coils, and his elongated earlobes signify his princely past. Buddhist deities employ hand and body gestures to convey meaning. Shakyamuni extends his right hand towards the earth, a symbolic act when he summoned the earth as a witness to his victory over Mara, the deity of the worldly realm, who attempted to divert his meditation.
