Panchaloha, the sacred alloy, is instantly recognised by its high-lustre, unique colour finish. The colour tones of precious metals such as gold and silver, blended with copper, zinc, and iron. Present-day Swamimalai is the home of contemporary panchaloha, or even bronze, sculpture. It is where this gorgeous standing Vishnu has been handpicked.
Broad, stately shoulders. Four slender arms and limbs. A perfectly symmetrical face characterised by classically handsome features. A crown as tall and dignified as the rest of Him. The silhouette draws heavily from Hoysala iconography, a school of aesthetics and architecture that flourished during the rule of the Hoysalas.
This Vishnu sculpture has been made using the same method as by Hoysala artisans of yore. In the shilpashastras, it is expounded as madhuchista vidhana, which is very similar to lost-wax metalcasting technique. This creates complex, richly detailed compositions such as these.
