The meditations of Medicine Buddha, also called Bhaisajyaguru are a powerful way of healing or increasing healing powers for oneself or others. In Mahayana Buddhism, he is described as a doctor who cures people’s sufferings, both physical as well as mental using the medications of his teachings. His teachings complement mainstream medical treatments by purifying and removing the karmic causes of diseases and cultivating the cause of holistic well-being. This brass statue of the Medicine Buddha is a beautiful depiction of the deity in a variation of two colours- one in a super glossy golden-hued natural brass shade and the other in an exotic henna touch to his garbs adorned on a bright yellow sun-glowing body.
The deity sits in his usual padmasana posture with the left hand holding a jar of medicine nectar (gallipot) and the right rests on his right knee holding a myrobalan stem between the thumb and index finger. The sculptor has given immense time while working on his facial features, as the sharp-pointed nose, beauteously curved eyebrows, slightly curved lips and the large wavy dot on forehead, reflect Buddha’s nature of peace and tranquillity. As per the iconographic depictions, Healing Buddha is shown with a blue skin tone because of being associated with the Pure Lapis Lazuli.
The sculptor has amazingly displayed his creativity in this Buddha brass statue, as can be seen by the clean overlapping folds of his robe that fall down from the left shoulder and the loose flow along the legs. Another unique thing is the style in which he adorns his garment; generally, Buddha has a bare right shoulder, but here a slight edge of his robe runs through his right shoulder, with just the designer border and little beyond it visible.
