An antiquated, fine copper statute of Bodhisattva Green Tara, this image from Nepal is an example of the classic art of the valley, which infuses metal with divinity. A youthful Green Tara sits in the regal Maharajalilasana wearing a diaphanous dhoti, five-pronged Buddhist crown, earrings, necklace, and armlets, all embellished with precious gemstones. Her right-hand dangles in the gesture of Varada or giving boons and her left hand holds a lotus, with Vitarka mudra, the gesture of imparting wisdom.
The finesse of the artwork is felt in the serenity of the expressions of Green Tara, especially her eyes which appear meditative yet brimming with life.
