This sculpture depicts an Apsara, a young and elegant female inhabitant of the heavenly planets, who gives sensual pleasure to men and demigods.
Apsaras have beautiful bodily features and their singing and dancing attract men.
This figurine is made of bronze and is inspired by the magnificent and erotic sculptures of Khajuraho (an ancient site having Hindu and Jain temples in the Madhya Pradesh state of India).
The admirable beauty of an Apsara is shown here as she stands on a small upturned lotus pedestal. Her thin waist makes a perfect S-curve as she stands on her left leg. Adorned in a short length dhoti with tassels hanging out, her slender legs look flawless. She is also embellished with a wide and beautiful waist band wrapped around the dhoti and the thick neckpieces and a long chain partially cover her bare chest.
Her dense hair is perfectly combed and gathered in a big bun. She holds a mirror in her left hand and looks into it with a gentle smile as if admiring the beauty of her face. Finally, she brings her right hand before her forehead holding vermilion (sindoor) between the thumb and index finger and applies it on the center parting of hair looking at the mirror. Vermilion is a representation of a married woman’s commitment to her husband and completes her shringaar.
