12'' Standing Shiva Parvati | Madhuchista Vidhana (Lost-Wax) | Panchaloha Bronze from Swamimalai

$1045
Only 1 available

This delicately ornate ‘panchaloha’ bronze image is allowing us to bear witness to the cosmic coming together of Shiva and Parvati in what our Agamic texts call ‘Kalyana Sundara’ – the marriage of the supreme destroyer and the recluse ascetic, and the mother goddess of nourishment and power. The highlight of the iconographic tradition of the imagery is the performance of ‘panigrahana’ – where Shiva accepts Parvati by taking her by her right hand. The bronze sculpture here captures that auspicious moment in motion, showing the two celestial beings beginning to grace each other.

The sculptural idiom of the Kalyanasundaramurti dictates that the image of the Shiva should be the tallest, and this is witnessed in the depiction here. His ornamented body is masculine, confident, and assured; Parvati’s piety and devotion is on display in the manner of her tender portrayal, waiting to be with her true love. Her free hand holds a lotus, while Shiva’s hands carry the ‘parashu’ or the axe, and a ‘mriga’ or deer – symbolising his lordship over the animal kingdom. Shiva’s left hand is also raised in the ‘abhaya mudra’ posture, dispelling fear from the hearts of those attending their wedding (which include the Saptarishis, the Saptamatrikas, Ashtadikpalas, Yakshas, and Gandharvas).

The complete Kalayanasundara image is accompanied by the figures of Vishnu and his consorts Lakshmi/or Bhudevi, who act as the parents of Parvati, giving her to Shiva. Brahma’s four-headed form is made to sit down and officiate as the wedding priest, wielding his ‘sruka’ and ‘sruva’ – the sacrificial ladle and spoon, and lead the to-be couple along the ritual of ‘saptapadi.’ Our earliest and complete example of this episode of Vaivahika Murti comes from the Ellora Caves.
