The Deepalakshmi is a staple of Indian festive decor. Deepalakshmi is the name given to a Lakshmi-roopa youth who is holding a deepa (flame, usually of the dia or lamp) in a welcoming stance.
As such, Deepalakshmi murtis are traditionally positioned at home and temple entrances. The Deepalakshmis that you see on this page may each be placed on either side of your home or office entrance.
Made from brass, these Deepalakshmi murits are mirror images of each other. Handsome features of the face, curvaceous figures accentuated by the hips jutting laterally outwards, and long supple limbs. The finest gold and silks adorn the Deepalakshmis, the very picture of prosperity and plenitude. A parrot perches on the curve of their shoulders, as if whispering secrets from another world into their ears.
There is precision and symmetry in the sculptor’s handiwork. For example, the musculature of the thigh beneath the pleats of the dhoti and the grasp of those gentle hands upon wide-set dias. Each Deepalakshmi stands upon a hexagonal three-tiered plinth. The bottom two tiers are engraved with lotus petals, while the thick-set disc, right beneath the Deepalakshmis’ feet, are engraved with distinctive patterns.
