An exceptionally ornate seated Buddha sculpture. Made from pure brass the colour of pale, molten, washed out gold. Among robe and hair and plinth, it is difficult to place a finger on which of the three features the most striking handiwork.
Of the robe of the Buddha, draped over the left shoulder and brought down the right, every square inch of its surface area is a visual narrative of the life of the Shakyamuni. The luxuriantly engraved lotus-shaped asana (seat) comes a close second.
The expressively carved hair and karnakundalas frame the handsome, contemplative mukhamandala of Bhaishajyaguru or Medicine/Healing Buddha. The iconographical giveaway is the pot of medical nectars on His lap and the myrobalan sprig in the right hand.
