Among Matrikas - Pratyangira appears as a ferocious lion-headed goddess, with an arresting fiery aura. Considered a manifestation of Atharvana Bhadra Kali, she too wears a garland of skulls. The story of her origin differs in the Vaishnava and Shaiva traditions - where the former considers her to be the consort of Lord Narasimha and the latter associates her with Sharabha. This Chaturbhja Narsimhi rides a Simha, under the shed of a Saptamukhi Naga and is seen holding a damru-coiled by a naga, pasa, trishula, and a vessel of blood. Her voluminous mane is said to distill the cosmos when shaken; this awe-inspiring avatar of Devi is a veristic protector.
