A representation of the iconic standing Gandhara Buddha, this 8-foot granite sculpture is a magnificent ode to the Enlightened One.
Granite forgets its hardness as the gentle presence of Buddha is infused in it by the artist, with the slight bent of his knee in a poised contrapposto, shifting weight on his left foot, suggesting graceful motion.
Fine waves of his hair, knotting of his garment on the chest, dangle of cloth on his arms, and the rippling folds all over are achieved by the impeccable skills of the sculptor.
Buddha’s eyes and lips seem to be three lotus buds blossoming on his face, marked by the dot, arched brows, and framed by long lobes- all marks of his supreme wisdom.
With a master’s calm on his face, Buddha raises his right hand in Vitarka- imparting knowledge while his left dangles in Varada, the gesture of giving.
