According to Shaiva tradition, Vel, the weapon and emblem of Kumara Karttikeya was presented to him by Jagadamba Uma Parvati, who gave the attribute to her son as a symbol of her powers. The weapon was used by Subramanyam in his battle against demons and it remains a potent manifestation of his powers amongst his followers in Southern India, who celebrate the festival of Thaipusam, for celebrating the acquiring of Vel by Kumara. In this brass Vel statue, the powerful aayudha of Karttikeya is placed on a stand, with the Tripuna symbol and the Tamil Om. Vel represents Uma, and Om symbolizes Shiva, thus making this Vel the most powerful insignia for a Shaiva worshiper.
