The gorgeous Lakshmi is seated on a lotus throne. It is formed of a gigantic bloom with multitudinous petals turned upside down.
Her legs are gathered in a rudimentary ardha-padmasana, clad in a dhoti on which the embroidery has been conveyed by strategic engravings upon the brass. Narrow waist leading to a wide-set upper torso, flanked by four arms.
Indeed, She is the chaturbhujadharini, the one possessed of (‘dharini’) four (‘chatur’) arms (‘bhuja’) arms. In each of Her posterior hands She holds a thick-stemmed lotus. The mudra (stance) of the anterior hands convey aashirvada (blessing) and abhaya (fearlessness). Wife of Vishnu and the presiding deity over wealth and resources, the Devi in Her independent iconography is always shown with four arms.
The engravings that define Her facial features are minimalistic. They convey determination and the great depths of wisdom. A tall, perfectly symmetrical crown sits on Her brow. Behind it is a halo emanating lotus petals alongs its circumference. The lotus flower, a symbol of unflinching purity, is integral to the iconography of Devi Lakshmi. It stands for the importance of arthashuddhi, the purity (‘shuddhi’) of one’s means (‘artha’).
