Between Kali and Shiva, the former is always shown dominant. She is standing on Shiva's prone body. Black in appearance, skulls and chopped hands adorn her body even as her red tongue hands out. Her terrifying appearance does not deter her devotees however. On either side of Kali's image are devotees engaged in ritual worship. The man holds a lit lamp and a bell as he prays; The woman waves a fly whisk over her image.
The canvas is horizontally divided into two. The above shows the image of Kali in a niche; the lower shows the scene in a temple in the morning. In Mithila, women form a major part of the devotees. Numerous women are shown carrying flowers, fruits, incense, lamps and other items of ritual worship. The artist has tried to portray the importance of ritual in religion and the importance Kali enjoys in Maithili pantheon.
