A lady’s attendant is not just any other servant. She is the constant companion of her mistress, taking care of her everyday needs, assisting her in many tasks, and being a close confidant of her- keeping the secrets of her lady. The relationship is clearly a tightly-knit one and has been used in many paintings that seek to give a glimpse into the life of the royal women.
Both the women stand on a balcony, probably soaking in the beauty of the evening sky shown in the background, simultaneously immersed in a private conversation. The attendant is depicted behind her mistress, relatively smaller in size and dressed modestly in comparison to the lady in orange attire. She is the centre of this watercolour painting, adorned in bejewelled mang tika (head ornament), jhumkas (earrings), choker neckpiece, baajuband (armband), and long haar made out of pearls. The quality of her clothes is top-notch, evident from the translucent Muslin chunri through which her Haath Phool (hand ornament) can be seen. The attendant has her hand gently placed on the shoulder of her mistress, seeming like she is about to divulge some secret. The painting is placed inside an oval frame decorated by the traditional golden floral motif.
