Mughal paintings, the art of the elite, endowed with a classical touch was marked by a rich style.

While depicting Shah Jahan and Mumtaz Mahal, the artists used a new kind of delicacy, a romantic flavor true to their life. Standing arm in arm looking deep into each other's eyes, no other world exists beyond the two. Shah Jahan lovingly caress her face, wishing to bestow every happiness in the world on her. Mumtaz glows in that knowledge. Shah Jahan's stylized turban add to his royal demeanour and his spouse's crown stands apart due to its shape and style. Her exquisitely detailed finery explores to make her appear more beautiful. The diaphanous skirts give impetus to their voluptuous figures. The symmetrical floral patterns on their tight pyjamas show the typical textile feature of the period.

The horizontal skyline and the flowers in the foreground seem superfluous features. Fine, form and colour come together to enrich the sensuality and passion that pervades the atmosphere of the painting.
