The Mughals gave impetus to art activity and ushered in the majesty of portraiture. Other schools of arts were quick to follow suit. However, the Mughal influence in portraiture has been hard to shrug off.

The mat is spread out the terrace; the chair is laid for the lady to relax and read. The book however, fails to hold her attention for long. She prefers to talk to her pet parrot sitting atop the golden cage that is his home for the night. The lady is dressed in rich clothes and adorned with ornaments. She has a sharp noseline and beautifully shaped eyes; her receding hair makes her forehead look quite broad; altogether, an attractive face. She sits with one leg folded in and the other hanging down the chair, indicating restlessness. Confusion in her thoughts is evident as she lifts her fingers to her lips and talks to her parrot. Though she talks to the bird, her gaze drifts away.

The terrace opens to clusters of trees and beyond the skies streaked with colour and light, successfully evoking down or dusk.

The tones of the artists palette are subdued in intensity, complementing the bold lines.
