An unusual aspect of the great Lord Shiva. Unlike any of His many roopas (forms), the one you see on this page depicts Him with a musical instrument in His hands. It is a veena, a classical musical instrument usually associated with Devi Sarasvati. A garland of lotuses cascades all the way down to His feet. The composure of His soft countenance completes the picture of serenity.
The all-annihilating Lord is not usually associated with such a quality. In fact, elements of His tandava iconography are to be found in this painting. There is the poor Apasmara (personification of avidya) beneath His steady feet. The locks of Shiva fly about His head, as if caught amidst motion. Also, of course, the chaturbhujadhari (four-armed) aspect.
Such a painting would make a valuable addition to the home of any Shaivite devotee. There is solid gesso superimposed with pure gold at multiple points on the canvas - from the loincloth and the veena of Shiva, to the attire and ornaments on the surrounding Shivagana.
