Tanjore paintings are famous for their unique and aesthetic description of devotional icons, and among all, the paintings of Lord Krishna are given the most love. Krishna, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, appeared on the earth in Dwapar Yuga to perform His transcendental pastimes so that the individual souls get attracted towards bhakti. He is the ocean of mercy and bliss, and thus, whoever remembers Him and chants His holy names experiences the highest form of pleasure.
This painting depicts Baby Krishna lying calmly on a big banyan leaf (Vatapatra) floating in an ocean. Although its veins appear sharp and edgy but they comfort Krishna as He lies on the leaf. He is elaborately adorned with several jewels on His transcendental body and appears like the glowing sun. The Lord with His inconceivable potencies acts like an ordinary child and brings His right foot to His mouth and sucks it. Whenever Krishna performed childish activities like this, everyone in Vrindavan especially gopis used to develop immense love and affection for Him. They all loved Him with their heart and soul. As you can see here, the long chains and necklaces cover most of baby Krishna’s bare body. He was very fond of stealing and eating butter from houses of goips, for which He is also called “Makhan chor”. He holds a butterball in His right hand, and brings a joyous smile on His moonlike face. Anyone who sees Krishna actually sees a festival.
