In such representations Krishna is known as ‘vata-patra-shayi’, meaning Krishna lying on a banyan leaf. This painting illustrates the legend from the Shrimad Bhagavatam where the Lord gives a darshan of His Maya to sage Markandeya. To facilitate this darshan, God appeared before the sage as a toe-sucking infant on a banyan leaf floating in the cosmic waters. Thus, this image of a playful infant is actually a manifestation of the Supreme God Narayana.

In this beautiful painting by renowned artist Kailash Raj, we see the bearded saint, his extreme age contrasting with the infancy of Krishna, paying homage to the Supreme Lord. He holds a rosary in one hand his asana and yogi-pot (kamandalu) are tucked under the other. That he is an ascetic is obvious from the ribs visible though his meager skin.

Krishna on the other hand has thick curly hair, and a deep blue body adorned with golden jewels. He very endearingly sucks His right toe, introducing a realistic touch into the painting. He has a chubby body with the head much larger in proportion to the body, much like any normal infant. The banyan leaf too is finely delineated. All in all, a fine compliment to the exceptional skill of Kailash Raj.
