In many tribal cultures, where flora and fauna are sacred to the people, even the act of cutting a tree for its utility is done after a beautiful ritual by the tribals. They approach the tree marked for cutting and after leaving all the birds and animals away from it, they pray for the tree’s forgiveness for having to cut it and ask it to give them nourishment and prosperity. A celebration of indigenous culture’s affinity with nature, this acrylic on canvas by Kritiraj Mhatre reminds one of this practice with its beautiful idiom and earthy color palette.
